Sara Efia

“In founded Golden Editions to unite contemporary design with artisan heritage.”

Golden editions ties its making to Sara Efia Reddin's own history: lamps and textiles handwoven in Ghana, where her mother's family is from, then assembled to order in her Barcelona workshop, with nothing kept in stock. She first travelled to Ghana at eighteen, nearly three decades before she launched her own lighting collection in 2019. In between lay nearly two decades as a design consultant in Paris, working in interiors, homewares and fashion for other brands. Trained as a textile designer at Central Saint Martins, she settled in Barcelona in 2021 and gave the label a permanent home.

I have three questions for you, and something in return.

Three questions.

Three crafts, one workshop in Gracia

Golden editions makes lamps and textiles, handwoven in Ghana and assembled to order in Barcelona. Founder Sara Efia Reddin, a textile designer trained at Central Saint Martins, runs the label from her studio in Gracia.

She was eighteen, travelling with her mother and her twin sister, when she first landed in Ghana in 1991. She was born in London; her mother's family is Ghanaian. Twenty-eight years passed between that landing and her first lighting collection, in 2019.

I had no set plan to begin with, I just felt that if I managed to make beautiful items, then everything else would fall into place.

The route back

For most of two decades the work belonged to other people's brands. She trained in textiles, then spent the years from 2003 consulting in Paris, on interiors, homewares and fashion, until the first collection under her own name in 2019. Barcelona came two years after that, and with it a fixed address.

The Deeply XL pendant lamp, handwoven in Bolgatanga.

Bolgatanga, Ho, Kumasi

The baskets and woven shades begin in Bolgatanga, in Ghana's far north. The partner there is ASIGE, a social enterprise working with the Sumbrungo Village Association and a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization. The straw, an elephant grass sold under the trade name Veta Vera, is split, twisted, hand dyed and woven. The Kente is woven in Ho, in the Volta Region, by an association led by the master weaver Mr Thompson. In December 2024, UNESCO inscribed Kente craftsmanship on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Ghana's first entry on the list. The third craft is brass, a newer collaboration in Kumasi: Mr Nortey and his team cast from recycled metal by the lost-wax method.

The Gifty pendant, cast brass from Kumasi.

Eight to ten weeks

Everything passes through Carrer Francisco Giner 45, the Gracia studio, shop and workshop where each collection is designed, developed, assembled and packaged. There are no production runs; a lamp is assembled once it is ordered, and a made-to-order piece takes eight to ten weeks. A cloth wall sconce spends two days on a Kente loom in Ghana before it is finished in a workshop near Barcelona. The electrics are bought in Europe and CE certified, with cloth-covered cable and a brass E27 bulb holder. For hotels and design studios there is a bespoke service, with recent projects of sixty, ninety or more lamps at a time.

Nothing at Golden editions is made for a shelf, only to order.
