Margherita Vaghi

“I wanted to give new life to fabrics I saw in my father’s company warehouse.”

Margherita Vaghi designs only with fabric that already exists: leftovers from around forty years of her father fitting out Italian luxury hotels, sixty thousand metres of it in the family warehouse by the brand's own count, velvet, damask, bouclé. None of it can be reordered. She climbed those shelves as a child, then trained as an art director and spent years in advertising agencies. In 2010 she began turning the leftovers into bags. She still draws every model, follows the making and handles the marketing.

I have three questions for you, and something in return.

Three questions.

What the hotels did not use

Labolsina makes bags from fabrics that once furnished luxury hotels and have sat by the metre in a family warehouse ever since. Margherita Vaghi runs the label in Monza, and every model ends when its fabric runs out.

Vittorio Vaghi spent around forty years in fabric, fitting out hotels the length of Italy, at the upper end of the market. What a job did not use went back to the family warehouse and stayed. Every metre lying there was bought for a hotel once: velvet, damask, striped chenille, ticking, bouclé, coated shower fabric, sixty thousand metres of it by the brand's own count. None of it is made any more. In 2010 his daughter Margherita began cutting into it.

The shower fabric went first

The first two bags, Lameg and Lanic, came out of coated shower fabric from the 1970s. Launodiuno followed, a project in 2014 and now a line in the shop, each piece marked 1/1. When a length is used up, the model is finished.

What she cuts for the tennis

For the ATP Challenger at the Villa Reale tennis club Labolsina has cut a short run twice, in 2025 and in 2026, the second year as a Challenger 125: racket covers, a shopper with an angled pocket for the handle, a duffle in printed waterproof eco-leather.

Two fabrics make a third

The grey and black diamond was there on the first model and has stayed. The cloth for it cannot be bought ready made, it has to be produced: two or three materials come together, velvet with eco-leather, cotton canvas with polyester, Alcantara with polyester. A laser cuts out the diamonds and high frequency welds them into a single length. What comes out did not exist before. Straps and trims are calfskin, initials on request. Every model carries the article La in its name. A Labolsina, Vaghi says, is not a bag but the bag.
