“I wanted to give new life to fabrics I saw in my father’s company warehouse.”
Margherita Vaghi designs only with fabric that already exists: leftovers from around forty years of her father fitting out Italian luxury hotels, sixty thousand metres of it in the family warehouse by the brand's own count, velvet, damask, bouclé. None of it can be reordered. She climbed those shelves as a child, then trained as an art director and spent years in advertising agencies. In 2010 she began turning the leftovers into bags. She still draws every model, follows the making and handles the marketing.
