“I was tired that people with little to no knowledge told the story of Indian craftsmanship to the Western world. So I started to do it myself.”
Charkha & Loom makes clothes, bags and things for the home made with artisan communities in India, and it exists because Sweta got tired of other people telling the story of Indian craftsmanship. She tells it herself. She works with the makers as a member of their community rather than an outside observer. Her background is in economics and development studies, research and advisory work that taught her to read how a community holds together. She started living and working outside India about a decade ago and set the label up in Amsterdam in 2024.
