“Our products are made of plastic that doesn't look like plastic. It's unique to touch. You need to feel it to believe it, because it's a very handwoven texture.”
Théla's woven bags go back to her first job, designing packaging for consumer goods at a branding agency. That first close contact with plastic packaging left her convinced, she says, that the trouble lies in how plastic is used and consumed rather than in the material itself. She quit. She then volunteered with craft communities in India, helping keep dying crafts alive as livelihoods, and learnt many of them herself. In Athens she turned to plastic, and to artisans she had come to know in India. By her account, she came to graphic design straight from architecture and co-founded two sustainable startups before Théla.
