“It's not about simply going somewhere and buying a container of finished goods. It's about working on the ground with people from another culture and mixing extraordinary handwork with modern design influences.”
The label began with what Andrea Bury saw in Marrakech after moving there in 2007 to restore a house in the medina: a craft undercut by cheap imports, and women with real skill but little income of their own. In 2011 she set up Abury in Berlin with a foundation beside it, so that the bags would pay their makers fairly and their sales would fund education in Morocco. She came to it from sponsorship and communications, including a year in Monaco helping to organise the first Laureus World Sports Awards. After accompanying a client at Formula 1 in 2004 or 2005, she wanted those skills to go into more meaningful work.
