Ranul Sense exists because Rick Johansson realised, after making scented candles as Christmas gifts, that what he cared about was the scent itself, not the candle carrying it. He came to scent from interior design and never trained as a perfumer: he arrived in Berlin from Taiwan on a one-year working holiday visa, stayed, and taught himself a few drops at a time, reading and taking workshops until his blends held. Today he keeps the range at five blends, mixed by hand in his Kreuzberg studio.
