“I always say that I'm not a designer. I start from the fabric.”
Effei grew out of a love of other cultures and their cloth. Its founder studied economics and management, and at university began cutting up her own trousers and adding something new to them. Two months after graduating, in the middle of the pandemic, she turned that habit into a company. Since then she has sought out people who still embroider, paint or print fabric by hand, in India, Bali, Burkina Faso and Mexico. Often they are small family workshops. Sometimes the way in is the niece of a grandmother who still does the work.
