VAELU cuts and sews every garment only after it is ordered in Dania Mollemeier's atelier in Beckum. The idea traces back to a children's home in South Africa, where she spent half a year after her Abitur, Germany's school-leaving exam, and met women who could sew but had never owned a machine of their own; she came home wanting to combine fashion with humanity. She trained in Münster, first as a bespoke dressmaker, then in product management for fashion design, and worked as a designer in Hamburg before returning to Beckum to start VAELU in 2022, on a second-hand cutting table.

The workshop that makes nothing in advance

In a small atelier in the Münsterland, Dania Mollemeier and a handful of women make every VAELU piece to order, one size at a time. Nothing is produced before someone asks for it. The value she wants back in fashion is the human work behind each garment.

Her first atelier was in premises her aunt and uncle rented, between a play kitchen and a small hockey pitch. The cutting table was second-hand, the machines too. Dania learned to sew from her mother, trained in Münster as a bespoke dressmaker and then in product management for fashion design, and named her graduation collection VALUE. VAELU grew out of that word, and out of a simple idea: to put the worth back into a garment, its materials, and above all the work of the people who make it.

Those people are women. Annette taught Dania pattern construction in Münster and is now her Schnittdirectrice, turning drawings into the dozens of precise pieces a garment needs. Ingrid has sewn for VAELU since its first week and has been at a machine for over forty years. Nadja, trained in bespoke dressmaking and long in bridalwear, brought her eye for fit to the IMAR.I coat. Dania sketches outdoors and brings the drawings back to them.

I like to let the special materials speak for themselves, so I develop the designs on the basis of the fabrics, not (as is often usual) the other way round.

Made in Germany, to order

Nothing at VAELU is made on spec. Each piece is cut and sewn only once it is ordered, every size on its own, never in stacked layers, so no garment is produced that no one has asked for. What the cutting table leaves over is kept and sewn into bags and small goods rather than thrown away. The materials are chosen the same way. Organic cotton and repurposed Italian wool, corozo buttons from suppliers in France and Lithuania, and a zip that once held up a whole coat: almost every zip on the market is plastic and made in Asia, so Dania waited months until a German family firm agreed to make her one on cotton tape with metal teeth, regionally, for VAELU. She is honest about what still travels. On her own materials page she notes that she is not happy about the corozo nut coming from South America, and she leaves the sentence there.

A workplace, not only a workshop

The lavender sachets are sewn by Frauen und MädchenTreff Courage, a Beckum association whose sewing workshop is run with and for refugee women. Across three years and three interviews, Dania has said the same thing: she wants the VAELU production site itself to become a workplace of that kind. It is the part of the mission she talks about most, and the part still ahead of her.
