The colour is already in the stone
Makers in Egypt polish, paint and weave what ROYA sells: alabaster candle holders, Fayoum pottery, palm leaf baskets, woven cotton. Each alabaster piece is listed on its own. Kim and Mo run the label from Bamberg.
Each holder is photographed front and back, so both sides are visible before anyone buys. The piece in the picture is the one that arrives. In the sets a medium holder stands about ten centimetres, an extra large about fifteen.
The bands of amber and the cloudy whites were in the stone before anyone touched it. Workshops in Egypt polish each holder by hand. Care is a dry cloth, no water, and a layer of sand in the base to keep wax off the stone.
The other workshops
Alabaster is the core of the range, and other crafts sit beside it. In the Fayoum oasis, artisans shape the pottery and paint it by hand. Other makers weave the baskets and vases from palm leaf.
Weavers make the tea towels in small batches, from recycled Egyptian cotton, and each one comes out different in colour and pattern.
The name means dream or vision in Arabic, the brand says.
