Mette Engelbrecht & Lotte Garnry

“We want to atone for the sins of earlier productions and overconsumption. We want to do good.”

Mette Engelbrecht has spent more than twenty years designing footwear, from sneakers to women’s shoes. With Atone, she wanted to make flats differently: close enough to the workshops to visit, understand the process, and refine every detail. She leads the product and design. Her longtime friend Lotte Garnry, who works in media and advertising strategy, co-founded the label and shapes how it speaks to the world. After years of talking about building something together, they launched Atone in 2024.

I have three questions for you, and something in return.

Three questions.

What Atone learned from sneakers

Atone makes the kind of flat shoes I’m always looking for: comfortable enough for a full day, thoughtfully designed, and made in Europe. The label was founded in Copenhagen by footwear designer Mette Engelbrecht and Lotte Garnry.

What first drew us to Atone was a simple idea: a flat shoe should not feel like a flat board. Mette Engelbrecht knows that feeling from the ballerinas she wore in the nineties. After more than twenty years designing footwear, including sneakers, she also knew there was a better way to build one.

That experience became the starting point for Atone. Mette wanted to make flats with softness and give underfoot, so they could stay on from morning to evening. Comfort is not an extra feature added at the end. It shapes the shoe from the first sketch.
Daylight, grass and a pale wooden door. A woman walks barefoot, a pair of brown flats carried in one hand.

Close enough to visit

The way Atone makes its shoes matters just as much. Earlier in her career, Mette worked with factories in Asia. During the pandemic, she could no longer travel to see how her designs were being made. From a desk in Copenhagen, it was difficult to understand what happened beyond the factory itself or who the suppliers were.
With Atone, she chose to keep production in Europe. The workshops are close enough for her to visit in person, stand on the factory floor, and follow the work. Finished stock travels by electric truck and can arrive within about a week, instead of spending months at sea.
Two cream ballerina flats with small bows and Atone wordmarks on the tan insoles lie diagonally on a pale blue surface.

A shoe starts anywhere

Sometimes a new style begins with a sketch. Sometimes it begins with a colour or with a material the supplier already has in stock. Mette tests the materials, receives prototypes at home, and adjusts them until the shoe feels right.
I like that the process sounds practical rather than precious. She pays attention to what other brands are doing and is open about it. The point is not to pretend that ideas appear from nowhere. It is to use her experience to make a version that feels distinctly Atone.
Ballerinas came first. The range now includes Mary Janes, loafers, slingbacks, and sandals, but the same idea runs through them: a flat shoe with more thought between the foot and the ground.

Making only what is needed

Atone also pushes back against the usual fashion calendar. New collections arrive, sales begin almost immediately, and customers learn to wait for a discount. Products are made for moments like Black Friday, then cleared when too much stock remains.
Atone works from real demand instead. It produces what its stockists order and what the webshop needs, with very little extra. The European workshops accept small runs, and popular styles can be reordered quickly. This keeps the lead times short and reduces the amount left waiting for a markdown.
Multiple pairs of flat shoes in silver, pink, yellow and brown, blue slingbacks with pink lining, and pale blue Mary Janes are arranged on a beige background, some cropped by the frame.
That approach comes with a higher price than fast fashion, and Atone is honest about it. The aim was never to make the cheapest flat. It was to make one with comfort, closer production, and a quantity that reflects what people actually want.

Small runs, quick reorders, and no reason to make more than people want.
